Religious Trauma and Spirituality
For many folks, religion and spirituality offer meaning-making, support, and hope as they move through an unpredictable world. For others, religion has been used as a form of control, coercion, and punishment leading to mental health struggles and developmental issues. In religious communities with high levels of control and conformity, people are often robbed of the opportunity to explore their identity, create authentic relationships, and build trust within themselves.
Maybe you no longer align with the faith of your childhood, but you internally battle with sharing your beliefs for fear of rejection. Perhaps you were formally excommunicated or kicked out of your faith community for your gender expression or sexuality, and you’re struggling with feelings of guilt, shame, loneliness, and anger. You may be exploring what a post-religion spirituality means to you or processing what it may be like to incorporate elements of a previous faith into your new identity. No matter the case, at Embodied Therapy Collective, we provide a safe, non-judgmental space to work through your faith, religious trauma, or hurt caused by faith communities.
